Devon Smith is a freelance journalist in Kitchener. Graduated from Conestoga College’s print journalism program, he is currently a copy-person at The Waterloo Region Record.

Devon was born in Halifax and raised in a small town on Georgian Bay. Son to an airline pilot, Devon’s sense of adventure was nurtured from a young age. This was a big part of what drew him to journalism.

His college education began with a foray into construction engineering. And though the time spent learning statics and building code was costly, choosing to take a new direction was the best decision of his life.

Since that decision, he has thoroughly enjoyed working as a reporter for Snap Burlington, Snap KW and Conestoga’s newspaper, Spoke. At Conestoga, he also gained experience in and enthusiasm for photography, videography and new media.

Devon won the 2012 Cambridge Times Award for best news photo and best feature photo and the 2012 Edward J. Hayes Award for best feature story, on a piece about the plight of a local fishing shop.
